• Hand Surgeon Conditions for Surgery

A hand surgeon is a specialist who operates mainly on the upper limbs of a patient. Although the descriptive title focuses on the lower part of the limb, the upper and lower arms may also be included in his or her field. In a few countries, this field is considered a unique one and they offer four to five year courses for those who wish to study in it.
    Conditions
There are several conditions that will prompt the use of a hand surgeon. These conditions include, but are not limited to, injuries to the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and congenital defects.
Injuries and trauma to the hands usually occur as accidents. These accidents can happen anywhere and in any condition, be it working environment or in a recreational one. These need the immediate attention of the specialist, especially if any dismemberment has occurred. In many of the cases of dismemberment, the dismembered part can be reattached if it can be found within a specific duration of time and with the right conditions. Conditions include the state of the member and that of the limb on the body. There are also instances when amputation may be the best option for dismembered parts. Injuries, which do not include dismemberment, will need to be assessed by the hand surgeon in order to make the necessary recommendations and treatment for it. Congenital defects are often assessed as soon as the baby is born and a remedy or treatment is scheduled according to wen it is suitable for the child. Reconstructive surgery often falls under the care of the specialist in order to return form and function to the limb.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated without any surgery if the case is not so severe. Wearing a correctional splint and making changes in one's work place and lifestyle can actually help to prevent this or treat it. Some forms of localized injections can also help to treat the condition. In severe cases, the nerve may need to be operated on in order to free it from being pinched or clamped. The operation is usually made in the base of the palm and can be done on both or one appendage only. Symptoms that signal the need for an operation by the specialist include constant numbness, weakness in the muscles in and around the area and sometimes even atrophy.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition that usually needs the attention of a hand surgeon. Although there are no current cures for this condition, there are some treatments that can help to alleviate the symptoms and prevent further damage and deformities to the hands. The specialist will need to review and assess the condition of the patient before he or she can recommend treatment. Treatment usually comes in the form of drugs, which alleviate the pain and discomfort that come with this condition. Modification of the disease process is a study in itself and not all treatments can be effective for each patient. Some therapies or treatments have undesirable side effects, which can damage specific organs or systems in the patient's body.
